Full Mouth Reconstruction in Miami & Key Biscayne, FL

Dr. Hernan Quintero

What is a full mouth reconstruction?

I'm Dr. Quintero. I'm a prosthodontist, which means my specialty training includes restoring and replacing teeth in complex cases. Let me walk you through what that actually means.

A full mouth reconstruction involves rebuilding or restoring many or all of the teeth, often considering the upper and lower arches together. The goal is to restore function, improve the bite, and address the dental problems affecting the mouth as a whole. Improving the appearance of the smile may also be an important part of the treatment plan.

Who may be a candidate for a full mouth reconstruction?

Two situations commonly bring people to me. The first is severe tooth wear, which may be related to grinding, also called bruxism, or acid erosion. Significant wear can shorten the teeth and change the way the upper and lower teeth come together. In some patients, it can also affect facial proportions and the amount of tooth that shows when they smile.

The second situation is multiple missing or severely damaged teeth. If you've been grinding for years and your teeth keep getting shorter, or you're missing several teeth, you may be a candidate. We need to evaluate your teeth, gums, bite, jaw relationships, and overall oral health to determine whether full mouth reconstruction is appropriate.

What treatments can be part of a full mouth reconstruction?

There are many tools we can use, including crowns, inlays or onlays, dental implants, bridges, and dentures. The combination depends on which teeth can be preserved, which teeth need to be replaced, and what we need to accomplish with the bite.

Some cases involve treatment on both arches, while others may focus more heavily on one arch. Either way, planning and coordination are important, and complex reconstruction takes time.

How do you plan a full mouth reconstruction?

Think of an architect. Nobody pours concrete before the drawings are done. We spend real time on the plan before we begin treatment.

That planning may include digital scans, photographs, X-rays, models, bite records, and other diagnostic information. We use those records to evaluate how your teeth come together and design the planned result before beginning the definitive restorative treatment.

How long does a full mouth reconstruction take?

The treatment timeline depends on the procedures involved. Some cases can be completed within several months, while treatment involving dental implants, bone grafting, periodontal procedures, or other surgery may take longer because healing needs to occur between different stages.

More complex cases can extend beyond a year. Once we've completed the evaluation and treatment plan, we can give you a better idea of what the timeline may look like for your particular reconstruction.

Is a full mouth reconstruction painful?

Full mouth reconstruction can involve several different procedures, so the experience depends on what your treatment plan includes. We use appropriate local anesthesia and other comfort measures during treatment.

Some temporary soreness or sensitivity can occur after restorative procedures, and treatment involving surgery may have a longer recovery period. We'll explain what to expect after each stage and provide instructions for managing your recovery.

What happens after a full mouth reconstruction?

Afterward, maintenance is important. If you clench or grind and we recommend a night guard, wearing it as directed can help protect your restorations from excessive forces.

You'll also need regular dental examinations and professional cleanings. X-rays may be recommended at appropriate intervals based on your individual oral health and risk factors so we can evaluate the teeth, bone, and areas around the restorations that we can't fully assess just by looking in the mouth.

The goal is to monitor the reconstruction and identify developing problems while they're still manageable.

Does dental insurance cover a full mouth reconstruction?

Dental insurance coverage for a full mouth reconstruction varies significantly between plans. Because a reconstruction may involve several different procedures, the insurance company may evaluate coverage for each service individually rather than treating the entire reconstruction as one procedure.

Annual maximums, deductibles, exclusions, frequency limitations, and other plan provisions can affect what your insurance contributes. We'll review the treatment plan, estimated costs, available benefits, and financing options with you before treatment begins.

How long does a full mouth reconstruction last?

A full mouth reconstruction isn't expected to last forever without maintenance. Crowns, bridges, implant restorations, and other components can function for many years, but there isn't one lifespan that applies to every restoration or every patient.

Longevity depends on factors such as the materials used, the condition of the supporting teeth and implants, your bite, clenching or grinding, oral hygiene, diet, and regular dental care. Coming in regularly gives us an opportunity to monitor the reconstruction and address smaller problems before they become larger ones.
